Toile de Nantes vers 1805
2500.00 €

Dessus de rideaux en toile de Nantes vers 1805. Une superbe scène d'escamoteur est présente .....
sur ce tissu ancien d'une grande rareté et dans un état quasi parfait. 190 X 60 cm environ.

This is a beautiful antique toile de Nantes bed-pelmet panel dating to 1805, a design called L'Escamoteur or The Trickster in excellent condition. It has been pieced across the width from 3 unmatched panels, 1 of which on the left edge is a slim piece set at 90 degrees from the rest, see photos
The reverse has some pieces of anther toile de Nantes: Le Char de Amphrite c1790,  and some small pieces of toile de Jouy: Les Delices des Quatre Saisons (winter) c1789-92 across the bottom edge where it would have been visible to the occupier of the bed below. The rest of the reverese is covered in heavy, rustic hand loomed linen. it is hand quilted with the remains of a thin layer of fleece batting. The top has a linen band sewn along it to pin it in place, the other edges have a delicate binding of the same toile.
It is in wonderful condition, it looks as if it has been stored away after very little use. It is madder printed in deep raspberry on fine linen or maybe a linen & cotton mix.
It measures 76" by 22.5" (6' 4" by 1' 10") or 1.93m by 57cms. It is in excellent condition, bright and unfaded, just the odd tiny little black specks here and there, there are a few rust marks on the reverse and some holes and rustmarks on the top binding where it has been nailed into place, and a couple of little holes right in the top left corner. All should be clear from the photos. A lovely piece for a collection of early toiles, it could be hung over a window, door or bed etc.
